The Ancient Custom of the Flitch of Bacon

Dunmow Flitch processionThe famous Flitch Trials are held each leap year when a flitch of bacon is awarded to participating couples who are able to satisfy the judge and jury that they have lived in married harmony for a year and a day.

This ancient custom, first held in Little Dunmow, was revived in 1855 in Great Dunmow. Many people visit the town during the trials to share in the traditional celebrations.

Easy access to the River Chelmer Valley, recreation ground and open spaces provide an excellent opportunity to explore the riverside walks, picnic areas and leisure facilities.

Dedicated children's play areas provide interesting play experiences within fenced environments and Dunmow Skate Park extends the leisure opportunities within the town.

Town Twinning
