Relax, Discover, Enjoy...GREAT DUNMOW - an historic North Essex town with origins reaching back beyond the Romans - occupied an important position on Stane Street, a main route between Colchester and St Albans.
The Ancient Custom of the Flitch of Bacon
This ancient custom, first held in Little Dunmow, was revived in 1855 in Great Dunmow. Many people visit the town during the trials to share in the traditional celebrations. Easy access to the River Chelmer Valley, recreation ground and open spaces provide an excellent opportunity to explore the riverside walks, picnic areas and leisure facilities. Dedicated children's play areas provide interesting play experiences within fenced environments and Dunmow Skate Park extends the leisure opportunities within the town.
Come and join in Great Dunmow's annual carnival, which takes place in September each year, or walk the Flitch Nature Trail, popular with ramblers and walkers. Here's a map showing the location of the main places of interest in Great Dunmow you might like to visit:
