ABOUT GREAT DUNMOW

Great Dunmow is situated on Stane Street, a Roman road which runs from Colchester to St Albans. Today, the town has nearly 9000 inhabitants and is popular with commuters, due to its mix of rural charm and good transport links to London.

The Ancient Custom of the Flitch of Bacon

Dunmow Flitch processionThe famous Dunmow Flitch Trials are held each leap year, when a flitch of bacon is awarded to participating couples who are able to satisfy the judge and jury of 12 local maidens and bachelors that they have lived in married harmony for a year and a day.

This ancient custom, first held in Little Dunmow, was revived in 1855 in Great Dunmow. Many people visit the town during the trials to attend the ceremonies and share in the traditional celebrations.

The High Street offers a diverse assortment of independent shops, some old and some new, but all with a passion for customer service and helping residents and visitors alike to find what they need.

There are also numerous industrial estates, located out of the town centre, which are continuing to expand and attract businesses and services, keen to capitalise on the town's growing population and favourable location.

So what are you waiting for? Come and see for yourself!

Great Dunmow is located in north west Essex between Bishop's Stortford and Braintree on the A120, not far from the M11 and Stansted Airport:
